Picture Page April 2014 A 1938 Cartridge Catalog......... I spotted this July 1938 P&M Collector's Supply cartridge price list on the web site of a book seller recently and couldn't resist the urge to buy it, in spite of the fact that it was a little late to take advantage of it's very reasonable prices by today's standards. The two gentlemen represented by P & M were Morris Pixley and Al Murphy. Cornell Publications (www.cornellpubs.com) offers a copy of this same catalog, but this one is an original that is in very good condition. The prices in the catalog range from 1 cent each for a wide assortment of .22 rim fire, to $15 for a .54 Jennings. Many of the cartridges were still in production by most of the cartridge manufacturers, or not too long out of production, at the time the catalog was printed. These would include the .50-110 WCF, which was listed at 15 and 20 cents each, the WRA Co .44-77 Sharps or Remington listed at 15 cents, and the .45-150 Winchester Express at 25 cents, just to name a few. However, I would surmise that the .44 Henry rim fires have seen the greatest appreciation of any of the cartridges listed in the catalog. They are priced in the catalog between 4 cents for an impressed 'U' headstamp and 15 cents for a short cased raised 'H'. With today's prices reaching $30 each or more for the most common example, this would conservatively represent an annual rate of return of 400 % for an impressed 'U' Henry sold today that had been purchased from P & M in 1938. I have included pictures of a number of selected pages from the catalog, which include some of the .44 Henry's on the first, followed by several pages that show a mix of other cartridges. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
