A box of Remington .45 ACP shot cartridges....
This is a full box of .45 ACP M15 shot cartridges, developed by Remington Arms Company for the US Government as a replacement for the M12 shot cartridges in December of 1943. The M12 had a paper bullet that tended to swell up and break open in humid climates. The extended length case of the M15 eliminated the need for the paper bullet; it was referred to as the all brass cartridge during development, and initially had a yellow waterproofed paper wad held in place at the case mouth with a roll crimp. The waterproofing was changed to a dark purplish-red color in July of 1944. Remington was the only maker of these cartridges. Headstamps include R A 4 (made in1944, like those in the box pictured here), R A 45, and REM-UMC 45 ACP. The 20 round boxes of M15 shot cartridges were used by the Army Air Force, and were utilized in their B-2 and B-4 emergency kits. They were intended for killing small game, and had to be loaded in the pistol individually by hand, as the cartridge length did not allow it to be fed from the magazine. The information above was taken almost entirely from History of Modern U.S. Military Small Arms Ammunition, by Hackley, Woodin & Scranton. . .
