Picture Page June 2015 A Velo-Dog box from France by way of Spain........ I bought three of these pristine boxes from a lady in Spain last month. I don't think they are overly uncommon, but while considering making the purchase, I realized that I haven't managed to acquire but one example (Remington-UMC) in my 40 or so years of box collecting. I suspect that may be due more so to my not trying real hard' or perhaps to my general unwillingness to turn loose of a buck, rather than to a lack of these boxes. All three of the boxes are empty, but considering that they were sent by mail from outside of he country, purchasing full boxes never was an option. However, aside from it being quite light, it is not otherwise apparent that the box pictured in these photos has been opened, because the person who opened it used a sharp blade to cut the sealing paper around the perimeter of the bottom on three sides, resulting in a bottom flap that is nearly imperceptible.
. . . The top label indicates production for Sociedad Espanola de Armas y Municiones S.A. - Eibar and Madrid Spain. From what I have gathered looking around on the internet, this was a company that marketed guns and ammunition that were made by other companies. The blue-banded side sealing label that was originally applied to the box by the manufacturer has had a tax stamp added that covers three sides. The one uncovered side of the blue banded sealing label is shown here, marked m/m 5.7. .
. . . On one side of the applied tax stamp label is 'Cartuchos cargados en el Extranjero'; this translates to 'cartridges loaded abroad' and indicates these boxes were manufactured by a company outside of Spain. . . . . . . The 'tax stamp' portion of the label is quite detailed; IMPUESTO POLVORAS Y MATRIAS EXPLOSIVAS translates to 'gunpowder and explosive materials tax'. . .. . . . . . . The third side of the tax stamp indicates a tax rate of 3 pesetas per 100 cartridges was imposed, or .75 peseta for the box of 25 cartridges. Per discussion on the International Ammunition Association's cartridge forum, this tax rate was established in 1932. The rectangular TIMBRE a METALICO stamp may translate to 'metallic stamp' or possibly 'cash stamp, perhaps a cancellation indicating that the tax had been paid on this box. . . . . . Unable to resist the urge to see what the tax stamp was hiding and thinking that perhaps the manufacturers name was hidden beneath it, I steamed it off and found that the 'm/m 5.7' shown above was on two opposite sides of the blue banded label, and on the other two was POUDRE SANS FUMEE BALLE BLINDEE. While this fell far short of my hopes for a manufacturer's name, it did provide the country of origin, as this was French for smokeless powder full metal jacket. That said, the cartridges were most likely made by Societe Francaise des Munitions (SFM).. . . . On the bottom is stamped the lot or item number and another stamp (UVM over B in an oval). Based again on discussion regarding the markings on this box on the IAA cartridge forum, the UVM stamp may indicate that the box was sold by Leon Beaux, a French company operating in Milan, Italy. . . . . . .
I've included pictures here of some of the Velo-Dog cartridges in my collection, including from the left, examples by Remington-UMC, Rheinisch-Westfalische Sprengstoff (Germany), Sellier & Bellot, Prague (Czechoslovakia), Societe Francaise de Munitions (France), Winchester Repeating Arms Co., and Union Explosivos de Espana, Madrid, Spain. Cartridges with the SFM headstamp were probably in the box discussed above. . . Here's a close up of the UEE monogram on the headstamp of the Union Explosivos de Espana cartridge in the photo above.
. . . . . .
The cartridges here include from the left examples made by Fabrique National (Belgium), Guilio Fiocchi, Lecco (Italy), Peters Cartridge Co., an unmarked one that is possibly Spanish, and two inside-primed examples, the first by Societe Francaise de Munitions and the last an unheadstamped one possibly made in Belgium. . . . .
